چکیده
Background and purpose In this study, the question of whether egocentric representation space is impaired in chronic unilateral vestibulopathies was examined. The objective to test current theories attributing a predominant role vestibular afferents spatial cognition assess representational neglect signs are common peripheral loss. Methods subjective straight-ahead (SSA) direction investigated using horizontal rod allowing translation rotation components body midline be dissociated 21 patients with loss (right, 13; left, eight) 12 healthy controls. Results Compared controls, vestibulopathy showed bias their SSA, without bias. not lateralized towards lesioned side as typically found for biases reported after Rather, SSA rightward whatever correlated loss, measured by caloric response vestibulo-ocular reflex gain, but visual vertical or residual spontaneous nystagmus. Conclusion present data suggest that dysfunctions neural networks involved egocentred allocentred representations differentially compensated defective patients. particular, they asymmetrical inputs cortical regions lead disturbances does processing right hemisphere stroke. They also highlight symmetrical unaltered cognition.

Neurobiology of unilateral spatial neglect.
Hemispatial neglect is a common and disabling consequence of stroke. Earlier studies aimed to identify a single area of the brain where damage caused neglect and sought a single disrupted process that could account for the symptoms. Recent studies have shifted toward identifying component processes and representations underlying spatial attention required for various tasks and identifying areas...
متن کاملThe active head-impulse test in unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy.
BACKGROUND The head-impulse test, which is sensitive and specific for detecting severe unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy, is an accepted part of the neurological examination, especially in patients with vertigo and balance disorders. OBJECTIVE To discover if the head-impulse test is just as useful diagnostically when patients are asked to rotate their own heads, the active head-impulse tes...
متن کاملSpace representation in unilateral spatial neglect.
Patients with unilateral brain lesions were given a task requiring exploration of space with the hand in order to assess the visual dependency of unilateral spatial neglect. The task was carried out both without visual control and under visual control. Performances were compared with that of normal subjects. Results were :(1) patients with right brain damage with no visual field defect demonstr...
متن کاملTime and neglect: abnormal temporal dynamics in unilateral spatial neglect.
Temporality enters our immediate experience as passage and becoming: the role time plays in the construction of a world of enduring entities tends to go unnoticed. This paper examines the relation between time and ontology in the context of unilateral neglect, a neuropsychological syndrome in which patients fail to perceive or respond to stimuli in the contralateral hemifield, behaving as if th...
